Description

Trauma-Informed Skills for Educators

A significant number of children and youth in our schools are impacted by trauma. As educators, we are faced with the repercussions that result from neglect, abuse, violence, and disasters plaguing our students. Sometimes, the impact is easy to identify while other times we confuse the behavior as defiance or disrespect. As educators, we need the knowledge to identify students who are struggling emotionally and skills and resources to help support them in their healing journey.

Please join the University of Southern California Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work and the Treatment and Services Adaptation Center, in partnership with the California Department of Education and Wellness Together School Mental Health, for a FREE one day workshop to help educators gain knowledge and skills to help support students affected by trauma.

Intended Audience:

• K-12 Teachers and Site/District Administrators
School Counselors, School Psychologists
School Social Workers
• School Nurses
School-Based LMFTs, LPCCs, LCSWs
Campus Health Center Staff
Education Specialists

Background:

The Trauma-informed Skills for Educators is a 6-hour professional development designed to enhance educators’ knowledge about trauma and its impact on students, as well as enhance educators’ ability to engage with youth who’ve been exposed to trauma. The workshop will address various types of trauma, the neurological impact of trauma on students, signs and symptoms of trauma, and describes how trauma can manifest in the classroom and impact student learning. Additionally, participants will learn concrete strategies to help support students in a more trauma-responsive way including: fostering a trauma-sensitive classroom climate, communicating with students about trauma, de-escalating disruptive incidents; and fostering trauma responsiveness throughout the school community.

Workshop Objectives:

1. Learn about different types of traumatic experiences and their prevalence
2. Understand how exposure to trauma can impact students’ emotional, social, and academic functioning
3. Enhance educators’ ability to respond supportively with students who’ve been exposed to trauma and build resilience
