Description

This is a professional workshop, open only to mental health and other health professionals.

Learn specific evidence based techniques for working with youth who have experienced trauma. This training will provide attendees with an overview of child trauma and evidence-based approaches for treatment. Common affective, behavioral, and cognitive reactions to trauma will be discussed. Trauma-Focused CBT, an empirically supported intervention for addressing symptoms related to trauma-exposure will be reviewed. Discussion will include the evidence for this approach and will detail the specific components and techniques of treatment. Participants will gain a better understanding of trauma exposure and cutting-edge interventions for children and adolescents.

Learning objectives:

  • Define trauma in childhood and identify common causes of trauma-related mental health disorders
  • Understand common post-traumatic reactions among trauma-exposed youth
  • Gain familiarity with the principles of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT)

Dr. Julia Felton is a licensed clinical psychologist at Alvord Baker and Associates and Director of the Master's in Clinical Psychological Sciences program at the University of Maryland. Dr. Felton's research and clinical work focuses on developmental psychopathology, with a specific interest in mood and substance use disorders as well as post-trauma functioning. Prior to joining the University of Maryland, Dr. Felton received her PhD from Vanderbilt University and completed a clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina.

PARKING: Parking is avialalble at the facility for 45 vehicles, and on the street. Cars parked on the street will need to be moved at the mid-morning break to comply with 2 hour street parking restrictions.
