Event Description

This is more than just a conference, it is a paradigm shift in the way we see “those kids”.

We will take you through a poverty simulation which will open your eyes to the survival mode many families live on a day to day basis.

The process of becoming Trauma Informed starts with you! It is not just about watching A movie, reading A book, attending A professional development, it’s about changing A CULTURE. Whether you are an administrator, educator or parent it is imperative to know change is needed.

This conference will not only help you to understand the why behind the culture shift but it will also provide you with you with specific strategies to implement in your school, classroom and even at home. Hear from leading experts and their journey to becoming trauma informed. There will practical give-away prizes,a Q&A period with the experts and also a time for you to create an action plan with the help of the experts and the Trauma Empowered Educator Consultants.

Our Featured Speakers:

Jim Sporleder-Jim Sporleder retired in 2014 as Principal of Lincoln High School in Walla Walla, WA. Under Jim’s leadership, Lincoln High School became a “Trauma Informed” school, gaining national attention due to a dramatic drop in out of school suspensions, increased graduation rates and the number of students going on to post-secondary education. These dramatic changes at Lincoln caught the attention of Jamie Redford, who spent a year filming the documentary, Paper Tigers, which tells the Lincoln story. The documentary was released at the May 2015 Seattle International Film Festival and received positive reviews.

Jim is currently working as a trauma-informed coach / consultant and is based in Walla Walla, WA. His travels as consultant, keynote speaker, presenter and trainer have taken him all over the United States.

Rebecca Lewis-Pankratz- I fight pOVERty. I have walked with dozens of families as they made it completely out of pOVERty. I see pOVERty as the main driver for most social problems. So let’s get people of of pOVERty! I work with kids, parents, educators and communities to do just that! Trauma-informed and restorative justice principles are the tool belt. Changed mindsets become the toolbox and relationships are the playground for taking this age old dilemma and turning it into a winnable game.

James Moffett -is the principal of Derby Hills Elementary School in Derby, Kansas. Throughout his career, Moffett has taught various demographic groups, observing the differences and similarities in effective instructional and behavioral strategies.

Ultimately, James realized what we all know meaningful relationships enhance behavior and academic success. He often threw around the words “grit” and “perseverance” but after viewing the movie documenting Jim Sporleder’s work in Washington Paper Tigers, it came full circle. Since then, James has worked to create a trauma-informed and trauma-responsive environment at Derby Hills, encompassing safe spots, mindfulness, self-regulation, and an explicit SEL curriculum.
