Description

Both the American Counseling Association and the National Association for Social Workers state that specialized training and supervision are required before engaging in counseling in any specialty area. Therefore, without formal trauma training to support ethical and informed clinical practice with this vulnerable population counselors are at risk for practicing outside the bounds of their competency. The American Mental Health Counseling Association and the American Psychological Association also recommend that counselors have specialized trauma mental health training and competency.

This experiential training has been developed to meet the ACA, APA and NASW requirements for ethical and competency-based trauma mental health practice.

Jun 14 - Level 1 Trauma-informed beliefs and core trauma knowledge LPCA CE approval 8192-19 5 Clock Hours (core) ($149)

Level 1 Course Objective:

Training participants will explore the current trauma-informed care and PTSD treatment outcome literature in order to understand foundational trauma knowledge including prevalence, trauma theory, and principles of trauma-specific care.

Training participants will review the competency-based trauma mental health literature including the attitude, knowledge, and skills of the trauma-competent counselor.

Training participants will develop trauma-competent therapeutic presence which involves ensuring that both trauma client and clinician remained grounded during the session to ensure their emotional safety and well-being.


Jul 12 - Level 2 Trauma-focused skills training with group supervision (Knowledge Centered Training) LPCA CE approval 8231-19 5 Clock Hours (core) ($149)

Level 2 Course Objective:

Training participants will explore the neurobiologically-informed literature in order to understand the foundational trauma knowledge needed to provide psychoeducation on the neurobiology of the traumatized brain and how the brain heals through treatment.

Training participants will review Herman’s tri-phasic model and apply all three stages (safety and stabilization, working through and reconnection) to clinical practice through the use of case studies.

Training participants will develop trauma-competent and evidence-based assessment and diagnostic skills according to the DSM V. Participants will also learn how to develop an informed consent for trauma treatment.


Aug 9 - Level 3 Trauma-sensitive clinical supervision: A competency-based perspective ( LPCA CE pending approval 5 Clock Hours for the CPCS credential in Georgia) ($149)


Level 3 Course Objective:

Training participants will explore the current trauma-competent supervision literature in order to understand models of trauma-specific clinical supervision.

Training participants will review the ethics of competency-based trauma mental health literature including how to apply these skills using case examples.

Training participants will apply an evidence-based conceptual framework during experiential exercises designed to support the development of trauma-focused skills inherent to the practice of trauma-competent clinical supervision.

According to the American Counseling Association (2014), specialized training and supervision are required before engaging in counseling in any specialty area. Therefore, without formal trauma training to support ethical and informed clinical practice with this vulnerable population counselors are at risk for practicing outside the bounds of their competency

The American Mental Health Counseling Association (2009) also recommends that counselors and have specialized training in trauma.

Each workshop may be purchased individually or as a complete series.

Melinda Paige earned a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Practice and an Ed.S in Professional Counseling from Georgia State University. She has twenty years of clinical experience serving survivors of trauma as well as trauma mental health counselor education and consultation experience.
