Description

Trauma, Grief, and God: When the Perfect Storm Hits Home

When: September 13, 2017 | 9:00am12:00pm

If only the faithful were immune from tragedies! However, fatal car crashes, suicides, other accidental deaths, and even homicides catch the church by surprise, leaving clergy and staff unsure about how best to proceed.

At the end of this seminar, clergy will be able to:

  • Describe the neuro-biological response to trauma;

  • Help families understand the investigation process, why and when autopsies are required, and other unique features of traumatic deaths;

  • Plan for long-term care of families in which the death was unanticipated.

Suicide Prevention: When your Gut Tells You To Do More

When: October 11, 2017 | 9:00am—12:00pm

Suicide in the 4 counties server by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office has increased steadily from 310 in 2014, to 353 in 2015, to 382 in 2016, to more than 400 projected for 2017. While middle -aged men continue to be most at risk group, child and adolescent suicide is escalating more than any other age group. At the end of this seminar, clergy will be able to:

  • Identify depression in adolescents and adults;

  • Discuss causes of suicide;

  • Describe what to do when an individual seems to be suicidal.

Walking the Line: When You Can’t Decide Whether to Help or to Refer

When: November 8, 2017 | 9:00am—12:00pm

Members of your faith community are much more likely to come to you when they are in trouble than they are to call a therapist. They trust you, and you want to maintain that trust, not risking making them feel discounted if you refer to a therapist. At the end of this seminar, clergy and therapists will be able to:

  • Identify when working together as a team can be in the person’s best interest;

  • Identify situations when staying separate can be in the person’s best interest;

  • Describe why dealing with spiritual aspects of trauma is crucial for maximal recovery;

  • Use tools such as a Spiritually-Informed Genogram, a Spiritual Trauma Assessment, and a Spiritual Experiences Scale to provide quality care, whether you are a clergy person or a therapist.
