Event description

Description

In conjunction with Franchise Exhibition Transmissão Fordlândia, organized by Stephanie Elyse Sherman and Agustina Woodgate (RADIOEE), apexart presents the exhibition's opening reception.

A series of public performances, conversations, and interviews. Throughout the evening, the participating artists amplify their sound work, perform, and share with communities. This will also be broadcast live on the radio. Transmissão Fordlândia, organized by RADIOEE, is an apexart Franchise Exhibition.

Featuring work by: Gabriel Martinho, Angelo Madson, and Véronique Isabelle

Véronique Isabelle will present an exploration of the fantastical landscapes of Fordlândia through the voices and stories of its residents. Through workshops and conversations with different local people, Isabelle presents an experiential sound cartography of the fantastical, drawn from participants’ descriptions of the community and its organization, beliefs, and stories. This soundscape will explore the complex layers of Fordlândia in time and space, revealing through sounds and stories the revolutionary movements from the past, as well as recent regional exploration projects, all while evoking the presence of supernatural forces and beings from the Encante (The Enchanted World) – a reality of many Amazonian communities.

Gabriel Marinho will present a soundscape of the Fordlândia noises and lands. Focusing on the listening experience of visitors, three speakers will be placed in the old factory hidden and dispersed in the environment. Exploring the resonance between the present sounds and the recorded ones, visitors will perceive a new impression of spatiality generated by the mixture between noises and voices. Marinho’s soundscape will be created and edited during the workshop in collaboration with Fordlândia’s community, hosting audio recording walks guided by local residents.

Angelo Madson will create low-tech broadcast mechanisms for sharing community audio. Madson will expand upon the tradition of creating alternative means of communication in Amazonia, drawing from traditional North brazil public sound transmission methods as Bike Som (a bike equipped with speakers that reproduces recorded and live material, usually used for advertising) and Rádio Poste (a circuit installation of speakers on street poles, usually present on street markets). In previous works, Angelo has used these as mobile or open spaces amplifiers of collective initiatives such as public manifestations or street events. For Transmissão Fordlândia, he will install soundworks, adapting a Radio Poste for the Fordlândia Factory, and also perform using Bike Som on a bike reconstructed with local equipment.

Transmissão Fordlândia is on view September 17 - October 14, 2017, in former Ford factory buildings in Fordlândia, Brazil.
