Description

Translation in Language Teaching:

Rethinking the Role of Translation in Third-level Language Learning

Languages Connect (2016), Ireland’s languages strategy, cites the development of intercultural competency as key to Ireland’s internationalist ambitions. Furthermore, the new Companion Volume to the Common European Framework for Language Learning (2018) sees mediation as being a central facet of not only interlingual communication but also language learning where the language user/learner as a social agent acts as an intermediary between interlocutors (p. 33). The interplay between the fields of Translation in Language Teaching (Pintado Gutiérrez, 2018) and Translation Studies offers a framework through which language teaching practitioners can begin to develop and enhance these skills in language learners and produce graduates that are more interculturally and plurilinguistically competent. This practical symposium will explore how we define translation pedagogy in the 21st Century, demonstrate how we can develop teaching and learning strategies using Translation Studies to develop these competencies and how we might assess them formatively and summatively to encourage students to reflect more deeply about their role as a social actor and language user operating between different languages and cultures. This symposium will bring together internationally renowned experts in the field from Ireland and the UK who are developing cutting-edge approaches and pedagogies in this realm offering language teaching professionals in Ireland the opportunity to develop new, innovative practices to address wider societal needs.

OUTCOMES

  • To consider the plethora of concepts, terms and approaches related to translation in language teaching (TILT) and how these may be connected with the reconceptualization of translation in language pedagogy.

  • To develop teaching and learning pedagogies that employ audiovisual translation to exploit the increasingly multilingual repertoires of students and foster their plurilingual competency.

  • To consider ways in which we can develop translation pedagogies for third level language instruction that develop learners’ communicative and mediation strategies as advocated by the CEFR and provide a basis for further intercultural and plurilingual reflection.

  • To explore a variety of ways in which cultural and linguistic mediation can be assessed through translation both formatively and summatively.
