Event description

Description

Learn to translate and understand the Torah in its original language. This 4-session Course will launch you on the path to reading and understanding the Torah & Prophets independently, without the aid of a written translation.

Learn the tools of translation: how verb forms, word choice, and syntax effect meaning in the Biblical text. As we hone our skills, we will further examine how vocabulary choices, word variations, and repetitions advance the narrative, give it nuance, and shape its direction.

We will study the haftarah read on the first day of Rosh haShana from the book of Shmuel. We read that Hannah is distraught and isolated due to her childlessness. Although the key human characters in the story fail to understand her, she turns to G-d who answers her supplication. The rabbis found in Hannah’s supplication a model for all prayer. Her courage and steadfast faith result in the birth of one of Israel’s greatest leaders.

Ability to read Hebrew required. Understanding of basic Hebrew helpful. Vocabulary sheets to guide you through the text will be supplied weekly. Plus individualized attention to help you develop your translations skills.

The Course meets for 4 Wednesdays at 2PM, beginning on Sept. 4 and finishing on Sept. 25. The cost is $130.
