Event description

Description

Hawad, sometimes Mahmoudan Hawad, (born 1950) is a Tuareg poet and author born in the Aïr region of Niger and who currently lives and publishes from Aix-en-Provence, France. Hawad deploys a method he calls furigraphy (a play on the word calligraphy) to create space in his poetry and to illuminate certain themes. Common themes of his work include thirst, movement, wandering, anarchy, and political themes related to Tuareg politics in the region. (From Wikipedia).

Presenting his work as guest-translator will be a long-time friend of the PTC André Naffis-Sahely. Naffis-Sahely is the author of The Promised Land: Poems from Itinerant Life (Penguin UK, 2017). He is currently a Visiting Teaching Fellow at Manchester Met's Writing School and is the poetry editor of Ambit magazine. His translations include over twenty titles of fiction, poetry and nonfiction from French and Italian, featuring works by Honoré de Balzac, Émile Zola, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Rashid Boudjedra, Abdellatif Laâbi and Alessandro Spina. Several of these translations have been featured as 'books of the year' in The Guardian, Financial Times and NPR.

Please, note this workshop will be on a Monday evening as opposed to our regular Tuesday slot.

The workshops are open to all. There is no need to know the language being translated.
