Event description
Transitioning from Energy Audits to Strategic Planning: Asking When and How is it Advantageous to Decarbonize

About this Event

Whether the motivation is to compete for tenants, attract ESG investment, or ultimately to comply with local or state requirements, decarbonization must be accomplished within the lifespan of nearly all of today’s existing buildings. So the key questions to commercial real estate are “How?” and “When?” is it advantageous to decarbonize, not “Will we?”.

To support planning and empower engineers and ownership to manage carbon emissions, San Francisco Department of the Environment developed the Strategic Decarbonization Assessment, a tool to facilitate systematic identification and planning for financially advantageous times to pursue environmentally beneficial building upgrades, including redesign of building systems. The keys to this approach: It is inevitable that equipment must eventually be replaced. Plan for replacement, and ground those plans in foundational real estate risk management practices.
