Event description

Description

South Congress Avenue (SoCo) isn’t just an iconic Austin street, it’s a Texas landmark. Sloping gently down to a view of the Texas Capitol, it’s a grand avenue littered with restaurants, shopping, bars, and events. The SoCo Strip is always changing and it’s hard to find the best spots — unless we turn it into a game!

MAKE IT A TRANSIT ADVENTURE! Capital Metro & the Texas Public Employess Association (TPEA) invite you to enjoy a silly sojourn up-and-down the SoCo Strip with a SoCo Scavenger Hunt followed by a trip to Guero's. Capital Metro is providing free Transit Day Passes and the TPEA is providing free appetizers -- so you can spend more time enjoying happy hour and less time finding parking.

5:00 PM | CHECK-IN | Are you a Texas State Employee? Join us in the lobby of the Hobby Building to get a free Capital Metro Day Pass!

WHERE TO MEET
Hobby Building - 333 Guadalupe Street | look for folks in Capital Metro gear.

GUERO'S TACO BAR is a vibrant part of South Austin, offering a large menu, salsa bar & hand-shaken margaritas in an historic building that attracts locals and tourists alike for a family-friendly mix of interior Mexican and Tex-Mex classics.

SOUTH CONGRESS AVENUE isn’t just an iconic Austin street, it’s a Texas landmark. Sloping gently down to a view of the Texas Capitol, it’s a grand avenue littered with restaurants, shopping, bars, and events. Not to mention a constant supply of live music. Only the best businesses survive here, so you can be sure it’s worth your time. Austin just wouldn’t be Austin without South Congress, and it’s the vein that leads straight to the heart of Texas.

TEXAS PUBLIC EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION is the oldest and largest state employee group. As a non-partisan, non-union association, TPEA is the leading advocate for ALL state employees before the Texas Legislature. TPEA encourages all state employees, regardless of rank or position, to become actively engaged in their careers in public service.

WHAT ABOUT THE BATS? Just North of the SoCo Strip is the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, which is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. When they emerge in the evening during “bat season,” it’s like a cloud flying toward the east. The best time to see the bats is at sunset (7:56 PM) that night. The best place to see the bats is at The Austin-American Statesman Bat Observation Center on the southeast side of the South Congress Bridge, which is free and open to the public.
