Event description

Description

In 2014, Houston’s Transgender Women of Color United for Change (T.W.C.U.C) had its first transgender Day of Resources and Healthy Living event, which had a tremendous and amazing turnout with a extremely diverse group of people in attendance. We had multiple vendors, workshops and hundreds of transgender and gender nonconforming attendees. This event brings education, support and resources to the transgender and gender nonconforming communities. The Transgender Day Of Resources and Healthy Living is an event that has been said to save lives and we are asking for your support and commitment to this worthwhile endeavor.

This year 2017 Transgender Day of Resources and Healthy Living FREE event ensures that we provide the necessary resources, and information to the transgender, gender nonconforming and (recently added) the intersex community of Houston and surrounding areas! Our purpose is to provide a safe space where one can gain access to healthier living, resources and workshops that are specific to the listed communities. In the previous years we’ve hosted the Transgender Day Of Remembrance also known as TDOR on the 3rd Wednesday of November followed by the Transgender Day Of Resources & Healthy Living on the 3rd Saturday and that was all.

This year we will now include the I am She and She was Me! Awards Gala which will honor Transgender women and men, Intersex leaders, Gender non conforming leaders and of course our allies! Additional information about the Gala can be found on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/events/452184885123605/?acontext=%7B%22action_history%22%3A%22null%22%7D and remember to nominate someone or even yourself for an award. This day will be amazing as we provide resources, access to care, access to housing, access to local services like laser hair removal and plastic surgery all followed by entertainment, food and the chance to honor our Trans, Gender nonconforming and Innersex leaders of Houston while encouraging our marginalized communities and our allies!

Statistics

The following statistics may help you understand the need for creating space that educates and acknowledges the transgender and gender non-conforming community. The need is urgent because many of these individuals have nowhere else to turn, This includes knowing that:

19% of those identifying as transgender have a household income of 10,000 of less

17% were refused care due to their gender expression

5.4% are HIV positive and nearly half are out of care and not receiving treatment

29% postponed medical care due to discrimination

47% have attempted suicide

26% the percentage of people who have lost

With your help we’re looking to double our number of participants this year. We are asking for vendors to secure booths that offer resources trans-specific and other resources and services that can be accessed. These services and resources include:

Education Health Screening

Vaccinations and Services

Housing Legal and other Services

And any services or resources that can benefit the listed communities!
