Event description

Description

The Supreme Court in National Legal Services Authority vs Union of India (NALSA) recognized the rights of transgender persons to gender identity as part of the constitutional right to life and dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution. The experience of marginality and exclusion within the transgender movement is complex and multi-layered with not just gender identity but also disability and caste compounding social discrimination. In this Conference, we aim to critically examine these intersectionalities. Through this National Conference, we hope to engage in and extend the boundaries of the current discourse on the rights of transgender persons and the law. We need to critically examine how the law impacts the lives of transgender persons and articulate rights within the complex discourse of gender identity in order to fulfill the transformative promise of NALSA.
