Event description
Prof Martin M. Antony will present a scientific and pragmatic transdiagnostic CBT approach to anxiety & related disorders

About this Event

Workshop Description

Traditionally, treatment approaches for anxiety-based problems have tended to emphasize the use of unique treatment protocols for specific disorders, even though most people with anxiety problems have more than one disorder, and the treatment strategies that are best supported tend to be similar across disorders. This workshop focuses on strategies for treating anxiety-related problems, regardless of the specific diagnosis. Participants will learn about effective strategies for treating the core features of anxiety-related disorders, including emotion dysregulation (e.g., feelings of anxiety, fear, and panic), cognitive features (e.g., worry, catastrophic thinking, obsessions), and behavioural features (e.g., avoidance, thought suppression, compulsions, safety behaviours). The presentation will discuss (1) the latest research on transdiagnostic treatments for anxiety and related disorders; (2) case formulation from a transdiagnostic perspective; (3) behavioural strategies; (4) cognitive strategies; (5) acceptance and mindfulness-based approaches; and (6) strategies for enhancing motivation and engagement. Strategies will be illustrated with video recorded vignettes, and participants will receive a comprehensive handout.

Objectives

1. Describe theoretical and empirical basis of transdiagnostic psychological treatments for anxiety and related disorders

2. Describe the use of case formulation in the transdiagnostic treatment of anxiety-based disorders

3. Describe evidence-based, transdiagnostic strategies for treating anxiety and related disorders, including behavioural approaches, cognitive approaches, and acceptance-based approaches

4. Describe strategies for dealing with treatment challenges
