Trans Dynamics: How psychodynamic therapy with transgender and gender-expansive youth can both affirm and explore emerging identity

Nina Williams, PsyD & Stephanie Sasso, PsyD

Saturday, April 8, 2017

 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Psychodynamic theory about gender, rooted in 19th century biology, has long explored our experience of gender identity with the aim of reconciling the trans patient’s gender identity with the assumed bedrock of biological sex. In light of new evidence from the biology of gender variation, however, that assumption is being challenged.  With advances in technology, altering the body to best suit one’s gender identity is a reality.   In spite of societal ambivalence about gender variation, no psychological treatment has been shown to alter core gender identity

How can psychotherapy with this population affirm the reality of our patients’ gender identity at the same time it produces a deeper level of psychological self-awareness and freedom?   This workshop explores the possibilities and the utility of treatment that is both culturally competent and insight-oriented. The day begins with a presentation of the evidence for a spectrum of gender identities and its implications for psychodynamic theory and practice by Nina Williams, PsyD.  Stephanie Sasso, PsyD will then describe the developmental processes in trans and gender expansive youth and their families.   The audience will have opportunities to ask questions and share reactions in large and small group settings.  Following lunch, a case presentation of a treatment of a trans youth will be followed by panel discussion including perspectives from family therapy, child and adolescent development, and psychoanalysis. By the end of the workshop you will:

  • Identify key issues faced by transgender and gender expansive youth

  • Describe an affirmative, insight-oriented approach to therapy and consultation with this group.

  • Identify key issues facing parents of these youth and strategies for balancing family needs, and cultural   and religious practices with affirming treatment of transgender youth.

  • View transgender and gender expansive identity through the lens of intersectionality and describe how varying aspects of identity intertwine with gender.

  • Understand the effects of your own beliefs and expression of gender identity on your practice with transgender youth and their families.

Stephanie Sasso, PsyD is a clinical psychologist and AASECT-Certified Sex Therapist who specializes in treating sexually diverse and gender expansive clients, especially transgender children, adolescents, and adults.  She also engages in advocacy, training, and consultation regarding cultural competency and best practices with sex and gender diverse populations.  She has a private practice in Highland Park.
