Event description

Description

Introduction to performing data analysis, using Excel

This session will teach you simple ways to analyse numerical data using Microsoft Excel. It will be a practical, hands-on workshop, allowing you to practice using Microsoft Excel during the session. Content will be tailored to the needs of attendees ensuring you have everything you need to begin your data analysis.

This practical workshop will introduce you to simple ways of exploring evaluation data, providing the tools you need to better understand your programme's impact. This will be followed by live demonstrations of how to use Microsoft Excel to perform this analysis. Together with the trainer, you will work on analysing a simple case study dataset, and summarising your findings.

By the end of this session you will:

  1. Understand simple ways to analyse numerical evaluation data to assess whether there has been a change in a child or young person’s outcomes over time
  2. Know how to create graphs using Microsoft Excel
  3. Know how to use simple formulas to perform calculations using Microsoft Excel
  4. Understand how to use Microsoft Excel tables to perform rapid data analysis

Who will benefit most?

This session is aimed at practitioners working in youth organisations, who are new to using Microsoft Excel. It will assume that you have little knowledge of how to use Microsoft Excel software to explore data. You should already be able to use computers to perform basic tasks such as word processing or surfing the internet.

This training will also benefit you if you are considering submitting for Validation at Standards 2 and above on the Project Oracle Standards of Evidence.

Equipment required

Please bring a laptop computer with a recent version of Microsoft Excel installed (Microsoft Excel 2007 or newer). We have a limited number of spare laptop compters you can use during the session. These must be requested beforehand and will be issued on a first-come first serve basis. If needed please request this when booking.

Preparation

We will be designing a case study to explore during the session. We envision that this case study will be based on the real life challenges of attendees. With this in mind, when booking to attend the session, we recommend that you list any questions or issues that you would like to explore.

You can also email example data to us. Please remove names and personal details and replace with reference numbers, before submitting. We will aim to help you explore your data in the session but cannot analyse your data for you.

Please send us your questions and example data by Tuesday 7th November if you would like these incorporated in the session. Please be aware that we may not have time to cover all queries in the session.
