Event description

Description

Intermediate data analysis, using Excel

This session will introduce you to sophisticated ways of analysing numerical evaluation data using Microsoft Excel. It will be a practical, hands-on workshop, allowing you to practice Microsoft Excel functions during the session. Content will be tailored to the needs of attendees ensuring you have everything you need to improve your data analysis.

The session will cover a variety of advanced methods to assess whether your programme has helped young people to achieve key outcomes. You will learn how to collate this information into a simple dashboard which will help you to understand participant development, and can be used to easily report to funders and other key stakeholders.

The session will also prepare you to design appropriate evaluation tools to make analysing and storing data as easy as possible. Together with the trainer, you will analyse a simple case study dataset and then summarise your findings. The session will include live demonstrations using Microsoft Excel to perform this analysis.

By the end of this session you will:

  1. Understand a variety of ways to assess whether your programme has improved outcomes for young people, including a basic understanding of statistical significance testing
  2. Know how to use Microsoft Excel to perform sophisticated data analysis
  3. Know how to produce an automated dashboard to summarise your data to help track participant progress and report to funders and key stakeholders
  4. Have improved knowledge of best practice for designing evaluation tools that will make it easier to perform data analysis
  5. Have the necessary tips and tricks to make data analysis and storage in Microsoft Excel easier

Who will benefit most?

This session is primarily aimed at people with some experience of using Microsoft Excel, including using Microsoft Excel to create graphs and tables, but little experience using Microsoft Excel to complete advanced data analysis. For example, you may struggle to analyse large amounts of evaluation data and draw relevant conclusions about whether your programme is effective.

Alternatively, you may be experienced in handling data in Microsoft Excel, but looking to improve efficiency and ensure best practice.

Lastly, you may be familiar with managing data in programmes such as Microsoft Access, Substance Views, or SPSS, but eager to learn how this can be managed efficiently in Microsoft Excel.

This training will also benefit you if you are considering submitting for Validation at Standards 2 and above on the Project Oracle Standards of Evidence.

Equipment required

Please bring a laptop computer with a recent version of Microsoft Excel installed (Microsoft Excel 2007 or newer). We have a limited number of spare laptop computers you can use during the session. These must be requested beforehand and will be issued on a first-come first serve basis. If needed please request this when booking.

Preparation

We will be designing a case study to explore during the session. We envision that this case study will be based on the real life challenges of attendees. With this in mind, when booking to attend the session, we recommend that you list any questions or issues that you would like to explore.

You can also email example data to us. Please remove names and personal details and replace with reference numbers, before submitting. We will aim to help you explore your data in the session but cannot analyse your data for you.

Please send us your questions and example data by Wednesday 22nd November if you would like these incorporated in the session. Please be aware that we may not have time to cover all queries in the session.
