Event description

Description

Manchester Metropolitan University is working in partnership with the Institute of Coding to deliver a training session on Unconscious Bias.

The training is relevant for those involved in:

  • the development and delivery of education/events for Digital Technology related careers
  • the recruitment or management of people in the Digital Technology sector/roles

Overview

The session will examine how the brain utilises short cuts in processing information, and how these short cuts can have profound effects on our behaviours and decision making.

The session will help participants to identify particular implicit, unconscious biases that exist, and draw on established strategies to mitigate against the impact of these subtle biases in our normal day-to-day working lives. Eliminating and mitigating against the sources of these biases, which can have long term impacts on individuals and organisations, can improve decision making and drive for better individual and organisational results.

The training will be delivered by Stuart McKenna, the Equality and Diversity lead at Manchester Met. He is considered a sector leader in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, with a career spanning over a decade. During his four years at Manchester Met, the University has gained 22nd place in the Stonewall Top 100 Workplace Equality Index and a Gold award in the BDFs Disability Standard. In this year’s inclusive companies awards he has been nominated for the Head of Diversity & Inclusion Award. He holds a PGCert. and PGDip. in Promoting Equality & Managing Diversity, from the University of Central Lancashire.
