Event description

Description

Discover the magic of trains at the Gaithersburg Community Museum’s Train Day. Visitors are invited to celebrate Gaithersburg’s long and storied history with the railroad. Enjoy a N-Gauge model train display presented by BANTRAK members, explore vintage rail cars, and participate in train-related activities. In the museum, have fun in the hands-on learning centers and shop for train-themed items. With any luck visitors can also enjoy the sights and sounds of the actual CSX and AMTRAK trains that frequently rumble past the Museum.

At 3:00 Peter Liebhold, curator at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, will talk on "Forgotten Workers: Building the Transcontinental Railroad" about people who built the Transcontinental Railroad which opened on May 10, 1869. (Talk is appropriate for ages 12 and up.)

This is a free, drop-in program for audiences of all ages, tickets are not required EXCEPT for the 3:00 talk where space is limited. Donations appreciated.
