Event description

The second annual Trail Trek Challenge is a team treasure-hunt and fundraising event that takes place on local nature preserves protected by Mississippi Valley Conservancy. It's a fun and easy way to get outdoors with friends and support protection of the blufflands, prairies, wildlife, and family farms – all natural treasures that make this such a great place to live, work, and play.

Get outdoors!
In one morning, you and your team will hike three different nature preserves (destinations to be revealed on event day). Along the way, you'll be hunting to identify the unique natural treasures on each trail. Once your team passport is complete, you'll head back to event headquarters for event results, lunch, goodies, awards, and entertainment.

Register with your team of family, friends, or co-workers, today!
Soon after registration, you'll receive a participant kit with tips and tools to help your team get sponsors. The teams that raise the most funds and complete their three-hike passports are the winners!

VENUE CHANGE: Due to a fire at Stoney Creek Hotel, our venue for this event has changed. The new location is the Gundersen Onalaska Clinic – lower level entrance on back side of building (3111 Gundersen Drive, Onalaska). It's right next door to the original venue.

Thanks to our event sponsors.
We thank Organic Valley, WKBT/News8, Midwest Family Broadcasting-La Crosse, Stoney-Creek Hotel & Conference Center, Trane-Ingersoll Rand, Altra Federal Credit Union, People’s Food Co-op, Subway, Designing Jewelers, Trust Point, Verve, Xcel Energy, Fifth Avenue Awards, Dairyland Power Cooperative, GoMacro, Advertising Concepts, KwikTrip and all of our generous event sponsors for supporting this event and all that it does to protect the natural lands around us.

Are there minimum age requirements to enter the event?

All ages are welcome and encouraged. Reduced price tickets are available for youth hikers, too. Hiking trails are easy to medium difficulty.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Your team will need enough vehicles to carpool from one hike location to the next.

What should I bring to the event?

We recommend good hiking or walking shoes and socks, refillable water bottle, hat, sunscreen, and bug spray. If you have a phone-camera, bring it to share your discoveries on Facebook with everyeone back at event headquarters. Some people also like to bring a backpack, binoculars, and a walking stick.

Are individual/non-team particpants allowed?

Yes. If you want to hike as a solo "team," select "individual" when ordering a ticket. You will be required to give yourself a team name before checking out.

How do I get on a team?

You can create a team by signing up as "Team" and giving your team a name. You will then receive a confirmation email with a link to your own team page. Continue to use that link to check back and see who is registered on your team. You will also need to register and pay for your own Trail Trekker ticket to participate on the team. You will also receive a link to invite friends to join your team and purchase their own tickets.

If someone invites you to join their team, you'll need to get the link to their team page or know their team name when purchasing a "Team" ticket on Eventbrite. If you know the team name, click "Tickets" and then "Team" so you can enter the team name and join that team when you purchase your ticket.

Is fundraising a required component of this event?

If your team wants to qualify for the Trail Trek Challenge medal competition and receive drawing tickets for our big drawing prize, you must raise donations for Mississippi Valley Conservancy's land protection mission. To do this, you will be asking family, friends, and co-workers to sponsor your team. Any amount raised is much appreciated, and all donations are tax deductible. After registering, you'll receive a simple fundraising kit to help your get team sponsors. On event day, your team turns in the total donations raised (cash and checks only). To be eligible for the prizes, each team must raise funds (beyond ticket price) and complete three short hikes.

Are the hikes difficult?

The average hike for this event is a mile in distance. The hikes range from easy to medium in difficulty, with the main difference being flatter vs. more hilly trails. Each team is assigned to hike three different trails to complete their event passport (for a total of roughly 3 miles of hiking in the event). If you or your team are concerned about difficulty of the hikes, contact us about an easy route for your team.

Does this event qualify for my employer's wellness program?

Great idea! Some of our sponsors do include it in their wellness programs. Consider suggesting it to your employer's wellness program manager and have them contact us for details.

Why am I required to give my age when I register?

We ask your age because we have some fun prizes for teams that fall in specific age ranges. We need your age to determine your team's average age.

What's the refund policy?

This is a rain or shine event. Because this is a fundraising event, no refunds will be given. Ticket funds are used to cover the costs of producing this nonprofit event.

How do I sign up to volunteer?

Contact us about the many volunteer opportunities. We need help with trail maintenance, event set-up, recruiting participants, registration, photography, AV support, and more. What would you like to do to help? Volunteers receive all the same event goodies that participants receive.

How can I contact the organizer with questions?

Send your questions to info@mississippivalleyconservancy.org or call us at (608) 784-3606 ext. 1
