Description

CREW LEADER: GLEN H.

HIKE DISTANCE: UP TO 3 MILES

ELEVATION GAIN: UP TO 300′

HIKE DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM

WORK DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM

WORK DESCRIPTION: TRAIL REPAIR.

This section of the closed 400 trail begins on the east side of McCord Creek and heads east towards Tanner Creek.

We will be doing a variety of items today and may split into two groups. We may take a look at a new boulder that is below Elowah falls and see if we can move it or chisel it down somehow. We have one of the drainage areas we had not yet finished to go back too. The leftover stump Jane was working on Jan 8 is still there. Also closer to Tanner Creek we have a new drainage area where we may put in some culverts and add soil to the tread. And closer to the tanner creek TH we have an area where we may reclaim the trial by moving the soil from a landslide back to the original tread. And we may remove some dangerous fence posts.

We will meet at 8:15 AM in the parking lot for a safety and tool talk before beginning our project.

Hiking information:

We will be on the Trail 400 Trail in the Gorge, meeting at the John B. Yeon Trailhead and then car pooling to another area to begin our hike .The hike will be over uneven terrain and will be more than 3-6 miles round trip. There is about 300' elevation to climb to the project site. If you have questions or concerns about the hike, please contact volunteers@trailkeepersoforegon.org.

What to expect:

You should expect to hike and use a variety of different tools over uneven terrain, with the possibility of obstacles to climb over and/or remove. You will be on a trail in a closed area due to the Eagle Creek fire in 2017. A mandatory detailed safety discussion will be held before work begins. For safety reasons, we expect volunteers to stay for the duration of the trail party. Please do not expect to be able to arrive late or to leave early.

What to Bring:

  • Lunch
  • Plenty of water
  • Snacks
  • Work gloves if you have them – loaners available

What to wear:

  • Boots (Please wear something sturdy that will protect your toes from sharp tools. No tennis shoes or open toed shoes!)
  • Work gloves (loaner gloves available)
  • Long sleeved shirts and pants.
  • Rain gear and layered clothing as appropriate for the weather
  • TKO will supply hard hats and safety glasses

Directions:

Take I-84 E/US-30 East to exit 35 from I-84 E/US-30 E. At the stop sign, make a left east then in 100 yds a right onto the Frontage Rd. Approx. 2.1 miles east, stop at the John B. Yeon trailhead parking. Don’t get back onto I-84. Please consider indicating an interest in carpooling when you register, or carpooling with someone you know. Parking spaces are limited.

If you have questions or concerns about the hike, please contact glen.hess@trailkeepersoforegon.org or volunteer@trailkeepersoforegon.org.
