Tragedy, Comedy and Truth in Comics

A Conversation Between Art Spiegelman and Joe Sacco

April 27, 6:30 pm

Swigert Commons
PNCA Main Campus Building

A Special Private Event for the PNCA Community and Friends

Legendary comic artist Art Spiegelman is joined in conversation with cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco at a special program for the PNCA Community.

Art Spiegelman has almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy closet and onto the literature shelves. In 1992, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative Maus — which portrayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. Maus II continued the remarkable story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their lives later in America. His comics are best known for their shifting graphic styles, their formal complexity, and controversial content.

Joe Sacco is a Maltese citizen currently residing in Portland, OR where he makes his living as a cartoonist and journalist. Sacco was awarded the American Book Award in 1996 for his book Palestine, a collection of his serialized comic book depicting Sacco’s encounters with Palestinians and Israelis as he traveled the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. His exhibition Graphic Articles in the Feldman Gallery at PNCA in 2008 was Sacco’s first in Portland.

PNCA+FIVE Idea Studios is a series of conversations, symposiums, performances and lectures on the inner workings of creative practice. The series features internationally acclaimed practitioners from a range of cultures in an effort to highlight the importance of creativity in fostering innovation and civic imagination.
