Traditional Mata Ortiz Pottery: Clay Workshop for Teachers
Event Information
Description
Traditional Mata Ortiz Pottery: Clay Workshop for Teachers, K-12
Partnership: Utah Division of Arts and Museums, Artworks for Kids, Weber State University Arts Learning Program
In this hands-on workshop participants will investigate the history, methodology and tools behind the unique pottery style of the Mata Ortiz potters. The Mexican village of Mata Ortiz, 100 miles from the US-Mexico border, is known for rich archaeological sites containing a distinctive style of pre-Columbian pottery. A few generations ago local artisans began making pots inspired by this ancient pottery. Ana Brooks grew up in Mata Ortiz making pottery with her mother and grandmother. Although she moved to Utah nearly thirty years ago, she still makes pots using clay and colorful rock harvested from Utah’s mountains and deserts. Her sisters, Gloria and Elda Hernandez, have traveled from Mata Ortiz to join her in sharing their family art form. Come and explore traditional Mata Ortiz pottery techniques!
This workshop will coincide with the Living Traditions Festival in Salt Lake City, a free three-day cultural celebration that presents the traditional music, dance, foods and crafts of the cultural communities that make Salt Lake City their home.
