Households often make trade-offs between housing and transportation costs: they can purchase a cheaper house at the urban fringe where they must spend significantly more on transportation, or pay more for a home in a walkable urban neighborhood with lower transportation costs. In the short-run the costs often seem equal, but motor vehicles rapidly depreciate while urban real estate tends to appreciate. In this presentation, Todd Litman will present estimates of the gain in long-term household wealth arising from shifting expenditures from transportation to housing. He will discuss the emerging needs for and the many social benefits arising from living and working in transportation-oriented smart growth communities.
Todd Litman is founder and executive director of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute, an independent research organization dedicated to developing innovative solutions to transport problems.[1] As a planning consultant in more than two dozen countries, he has worked on numerous studies that evaluate transportation costs, benefits and innovations. He authored the Online TDM Encyclopedia, a comprehensive Internet resource for identifying and evaluating mobility management strategies; Transportation Cost and Benefit Analysis: Techniques, Estimates and Implications, a comprehensive study which provides cost and benefit information in an easy-to-apply format; and Parking Management Best Practices, a comprehensive book on innovative management solutions to parking problems. He was an Adjunct Professor at the School of Community and Regional Planning (SCARP), University of British Columbia (2008–2010) and served on the Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences (2010–2015). He holds a Masters of Environmental Studies and a BA in urban planning, both from Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. His full CV can be found here.
