Mr. Walsh was appointed Commissioner of the New York City Department of Small Business Services (SBS) by Mayor Bloomberg in January 2002. During his tenure, SBS built a suite of services to help small businesses start, operate and expand; energized the City’s promotion and support of minority and women-owned businesses; and reconfigured the City’s adult workforce programs to be used as a tool for economic development by linking employers to a skilled and qualified workforce. Mr. Walsh reports on small business developments on 1010 WINS. The Bottom Line can be heard every Monday and Friday at 8:56 AM and 5:56 PM.

Howard Glickberg , Vice Chairman of Development: Fairway Markets

Howard Glickberg (who goes by Howie) proudly continues in the tradition of high quality traditional, organic and specialty food at good prices, established by his grandfather Nathan Glickberg, the founder of Fairway Market. Whilehis father, Leo, worked in the first Fairway on W. 74th Street and Broadway, Howie did not enter the grocery business full-time until 1974 – six years after he graduated from C.W. Post College. He did, however, work in the store part-time during college, spending a good deal of time in produce and getting a strong feel for the work ethic, theknowledge and family pride his dad – a very tough taskmaster – had. The third-generation member of the founding family now works with his son Dan Glickberg, Vice President of Fairway, whom he groomed to be the fourth generation member of this family-run business. Currently he and Sterling are working on an aggressive expansion plan to add to the most recent new stores in  Red Hook, Brooklyn, Paramus, New Jersey, Pelham Manor, New York, Stamford, Connecticut, Upper East Side, Douglaston, Queens and Woodland Park, New Jersey. Today, there are ten Fairway Markets and Howie – for more than 30 years – invested in the high standards of excellence with ‘no shortcuts’ philosophy – a trademark of Fairway – that has contributed to its great success.

Jacques Torres, Owner Jacque Torres Chocolate

Fondly referred to as Mr. Chocolate, Jacques Torres (mrchocolate.com) is the authority on all things related to this confectionery delight.  Through his early years as a pastry chef, Jacques developed a deep affinity and passion for chocolate.  Raised in France, Jacques fulfilled his American dream in 2000 with the opening of his first chocolate factory, Jacques Torres Chocolate in the DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York.  Jacques was a pioneer—the first artisan chocolatier to start from cocoa beans to make his own chocolate.  Jacques prides himself on specializing in fresh, hand-crafted chocolates using premium ingredients free of preservatives and artificial flavors. Jacques and his chocolate became an instant success attracting fans from all over the country.  In 2004, he opened his second chocolate factory and flagship store, Jacques Torres Chocolate, in downtown New York City on Hudson Street.  With a retail viewing space surrounded by 5,000 square feet of a chocolate manufacturing plant, at the Hudson St. workshop, visitors can peer into Jacques’ venerated process of turning cocoa beans into chocolate bars. Today, Jacques produces and sells his chocolates and other high-end confectionery products at his two workshops and retail-only boutiques on the Upper West Side, Chelsea Market, and Rockefeller Center, all in Manhattan.
