Event description

Description

Prerequisites

This is an advanced clinic. Participants must be comfortable climbing mixed routes graded M5 and harder and have trad climbing experience on rock climbs. Some experience leading sport mixed climbs is recommended, but not required. Participants who do not meet these prerequisites and choose to register for the Clinic may be asked by the clinic instructor to not participate as this would take away from the ability of instructors to teach advanced level skills.

Clinic Description

Join Black Diamond athlete Raphael Slawinski in this intensive, five hour clinic to learn the art of traditional mixed climbing. This clinic is designed to build on your foundation of trad climbing and mixed climbing experience to open up new doors in your climbing. Whether your ambitions are single pitch mixed lines in the Midwest or alpine objectives in the Canadian Rockies, this clinic will help you develop the mindset and skill set to reach new heights. Topic covered in the clinic include equipment, techniques and tactics, the mental game, and strategies for approaching a lead. Participants will have plenty of time for hands on practice and coaching.

About the Instructor

From blackdiamondequipment.com

Raphael's love affair with the mountains started with downhill skiing, first in the Tatra Mountains in Poland and later in the Canadian Rockies. Gradually skiing gave way to the less scripted adventures of mountaineering. Sometime after he started climbing, Raphael discovered he had a facility for ice climbing – or maybe it was just that he was more willing to suffer than other, more reasonable people. Looking to have even more fun with ice tools, Raphael was fortunate to get into mixed climbing just as that previously obscure activity was undergoing a real revolution. However, after a few years’ fascination with technical difficulty, he found a renewed passion for the mountains. Around the same time, Raphael started venturing beyond the Canadian Rockies, first to Alaska and then to the Karakoram. In the high mountains of Pakistan he discovered a whole new side to alpinism – that of hard climbing at high altitudes. This discovery didn’t mean he gave up other forms of climbing, but it’s made the entire experience even richer. Raphael hopes to keep pushing himself and having fun, from the boulders to the Himalaya, for many years to come.

Equipment

Climbing Equipment is not included in the clinic with the exception of technical ice tools. Clinic participants should make arrangements to have a climbing harness, climbing helmet, mountaineering boots compatible with crampons, and crampons. Ice climbing equipment rental packages are available on site for $10 for use during the clinic. Additional information about climbing equipment rental is included in the Confirmation Email participants receive upon registration. In addition, participants need to come prepared with clothing, food, and beverages for a full day outside in the cold. A recommended gear list is provided in the Confirmation Email.

A note on clinic costs

Money raised from fees for Ice Climbing Clinics at the Sandstone Ice Fest go directly to supporting the work of the Minnesota Climbers Association (MCA), a 501(c)(3) non-profit that works to support the sport of outdoor climbing in Minnesota. Through donations, fundraisers, the support of the City of Sandstone and the time and dedication of volunteers, the MCA is able to maintain the ice farming operation at the Sandstone Ice Park every winter. For more information about all the work of the MCA, check out mnclimbers.org. Thanks for your support.
