Event Details

North American Tracking Certification  |  Cyber Tracker International

In the Sierra Nevada Foothills in and near Nevada City, CA.

Track and Sign Certification is a two-day practical field test and learning opportunity that emphasizes open, honest dialogue and real learning. The track and sign of any and all species encountered in the field may be asked, whether big or small, clear or obscure. After participants give their answers, a dialogue ensues between the evaluator and participants to provide the opportunity for everyone involved to learn and to internalize the field marks used for identification. Answers are collected and scored to evaluate each participant’s level of track and sign knowledge.

Tracker Certification emphasizes practical tracking and the development of reliable field skills and is unassociated with any particular philosophy or tracking school. No prior training is required to participate. For more information on the evaluation process visit: The evaluation is run under the auspices of CyberTracker Conservation and is administered by a qualified evaluator. If you score well enough on the evaluation, you will be added to CyberTracker’s roster of Certified Trackers.
CyberTracker Conservation is a non-profit organization whose vision is to promote a worldwide environmental monitoring network. For more information visit:

Evaluator: Matt Nelson :Matt holds a Senior Tracker certificate from Cybertracker Conservation, is a track and sign evaluator with the same organization, and has worked on numerous wildlife and research projects, including the Gualala River Watershed council, the Garfield/Mesa Lion project, and the East Bay Puma Project. He currently resides in the beautiful coastal Mendonoma mountains where he was raised.

This is a two-day workshop, requiring a full day commitment both days. We will be outside all day, visiting multiple sites, traveling by foot and/or carpooling. Be prepared for moderate activity walking between sites, then standing around to observe and discuss track and sign. You may want to get down in the dirt/mud to observe tracks closely. Clothing appropriate for a day in the field is essential. Wear & bring layers, proper footwear is an absolute must. Bring lunch and snacks we will go all day 9-5.
