“A focal point, an axis, a fulcrum, around which the power and influence of the modern world has long been distributed.  The Atlantic existed in equipoise between the blocs of power and cultural influence that have shaped the modern world. It is an entity that links them, it unites them, and in some indescribable way also defines them.”    –Simon Winchester

Simon Winchester is an author, journalist and broadcaster of enviable range. Time magazine calls him “an extraordinarily graceful writer.”   His many books include the best-selling The Professor and the MadmanA Crack in the Edge of the World, and The Map that Changed the World. Winchester was made Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006.

With ATLANTIC: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discovers, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories, he returns to his trademark blend of history, natural science, and keen observations with a fascinating “biography” of one of the world’s great oceans. Displaying the remarkable fluidity of narrative style and command of content that has earned him praise as a master storyteller, Winchester delves deeply into the long, complicated story of a body of water that has been at the center of western civilization.
