TPS Empowering WOMANKIND: A Self Defense class
Sat, Apr 29, 2017, 4:00 PM – Sun, Apr 30, 2017, 6:00 PM EDT
The Promise Society (TPS) and WOMANKIND (Formerly New York Asian Women's Center) are proud to host a self defense/ self awareness course taught by world class athlete and instructor, Ana Lowry from Unity Jiu Jitsu school.
The art of Jiu Jitsu is geared towards improving one's self defense. Many techniques used in Jiu Jitsu are purely technical, requiring barely any strength, and can be used to triumph over much stronger opponents. This self defense course is designed to make you more aware, prepared, and ready for any situation that may occur in your everyday life. Although hopefully you will never be in a situation where you must use these tactics, we hope this course provides helpful tips that are simple, effective and easy to use.
Net proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to further the programs of WOMANKIND, which helps women and their children overcome domestic violence and other forms of abuse by empowering them to govern their own lives. The Center provides a safe haven through multi-lingual support programs and shelter services. In addition, the Center works to raise public awareness about violence against women, advocates for the rights of survivors, and acts as an agent of social change.
Thanks to Ana Lowry and Unity Jiu Jitsu school in New York for providing the space, time, and instruction to teach us how to protect ourselves in unexpected situations. Eventbrite tickets will include a 90 minute jiu-jitsu class and light snacks from our sponsors.
What should I wear to the event? What should I bring? Can I change my clothes there?
Wear comfortable work out clothes. Shoes are not required for class. There are changing rooms and showers on premises but please come earlier to access this since class will start promptly at 4:00PM. Feel free to bring water to keep yourself hydrated. We will supply snacks after class.
How long is the class, and when is the class?
Due to the popularity of last year's event, we are hosting 2 sessions that weekend- one on Saturday 04/29, from 4:00PM- 6:00PM and the other on Sunday 4/30, from 4:00PM- 6:00PM. The content will be the same in both classes.
The class will be 2 hours, including a post class mingling event from to allow you to network with WOMANKIND, TPS and the Unity Jiu Jitsu school staff. The post class event is optional but highly recommended.
Who will I be partnered with during class?
Please indicate your preference to be partnered with someone of the same gender, opposite gender, or if you'd like to partner with a friend. We will try to honor the request, however, there are other factors that must be considered by the instructor, such as whether the pairing is compatible based on physical build of the students.
