Description

Put together your best team and bring your A Game to Towson's Black Faculty and Staff's first ever Spades Tournament.

Entry Fee is $25 per 2 person team.

Prize money...

1st Place $200

2nd Place $100

3rd Place $50

Refreshments available.

*One ticket purchased per team.

Rules Below



1. Teams will be composed of 2 players who will sit directly across from each when playing.
2. Games will be to 250 points.
3. The Dealer will deal all cards; 13 to each player
4. Definitions and Terminology

  • a. Books: Refers to taking or winning one hand

  • b. Board: A total of 4 books

  • c. Bid: A player chooses the number of books that they will take.

  • d. Set: When a team fails to win enough books to reach its total bid.

  • e. Reneging: When a player fails to play the suite of the lead card and later throws that same suite.

  • i. (Hearts is the lead card, Player A throws a spade to win the book, later Player A throws a Heart. Player A has reneged.)

  • ii. Penalty for Reneging is subtraction of 2 books from that infracting team and the addition of 2 books to the opposing team.

5. Scoring :

  • a. Book = 10 points

  • b. Bidding and taking all 10 books = 200 points

  • c. Not reaching a team bid = Minus # of books bid X 10 pts.

  • d. Reneging = -20 points

6. You only earn books for what you bid, No overbooks.
7. No table talk or giving hints to a partner will be allowed. Talking is only allowed when bidding.
8. Players must follow the suite of the lead card, if they have a card of that suit. If a player does not have a chard of that suit, they can choose to throw a spade or another suit.
9. A player cannot lead with a spade until a spade has been played. This is unless they have only spades.
10. The hierarchy of cards are as follows:

  • a. Big Joker(Black)

  • b. Little Joker(Red)

  • c. Ace of Spades etc.

11. A spade can trump or beat or beat all other suits.
12. A misdeal can be called for the following:

  • a. Player was not dealt exactly 13 cards.

  • b. Player does not have any spades.

  • c. If any card is seen while dealing.

13. If you misdeal, it goes to the next dealer to the right.
14. Players must bid in order, starting with the player directly to the left of the dealer.
15. Dealer must offer the player his/her right, the opportunity to cut the cards after they are shuffled.
16. The minimum total bid for a team is 4 = board.
17. A card laid is card played! Card played cannot be picked up at any time!
