Event description

Independent Lens, in partnership with KLRU and the Texas Tribune, presents a special online screening and panel discussion of TOWER, Keith Maitland's feature-length documentary that combines archival footage with rotoscopic animation to reveal the untold stories of the witnesses, heroes, and survivors of America’s first mass school shooting at the University of Texas, 1966.

The film screening will be followed by a live stream panel discussion to explore how film and narrative can facilitate the processing of traumatic events and the development of collective memory. What does it mean for survivors to tell their story 50 years after the fact? Why was public discussion and recognition of this event delayed for so long? How does art help in the retelling of these events?

Our panel will feature:

Rodney Gibbs, CPO, Texas Tribune (Moderator)

Keith Maitland, Director, TOWER

Megan Gilbride, Producer, TOWER

John "Artly" Fox, Survivor of the UT shooting, film subject of Tower

Dr. Joan Neuberger, Professor & UT historian, UT Austin

This event is free and open to the public! Join us online for the screening and film discussion at the following link:
