Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Tour the interior of one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States, Thomas Point Shoal, a National Historic Landmark and icon of the Chesapeake Bay! Our experienced lighthouse docents will tell the stories of the history of the light, the life of keepers in the early days and the role of our modern-day Coast Guard. Built in 1875, the Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse is the last "intact" lighthouse of its kind left in its original location.

No other tour takes you inside to:

  • See how the lighthouse keepers lived
  • See the furnishings and equipment
  • Learn about other lighthouses on the Bay and how many met their demise
  • See how the U.S. Lighthouse Society is restoring and preserving this lighthouse

This tour is "adventure travel" and requires the agility to climb ladders, move through a 2' square hatch, and move between pier and boat for a 30 minute trip in the open Bay. Skirts are discouraged. Shoes must have closed toes, closed heels, and non-skid soles. Sunscreen is a good idea.

Facilities notes:

  • This is a 3 hour event from getting aboard the boat to disembarking back at the museum
  • There are restrooms at the museum, but not on the boat or the lighthouse
  • Smoking, food, and drink are not allowed

When must I arrive at the museum?

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before departure to allow time to register and use the restroom. The boat leaves on time. If you are late, you will miss it.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Allow time to find street parking, usually within a few minutes' walk to the museum.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Children must be at least 12 years old, 48" tall, and accompanied by a responsible adult.

What can I bring into the event?

Large bags, knapsacks, etc. may not fit through the 2' square hatch you enter. Cameras, purses, etc. may be passed to a docent as you go through the hatch, or left safely aboard the boat.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?

The email you will receive confirming your ticket(s) will have contact information and other instructions. Please be sure to read it.

What's the refund policy?

If conditions in the Bay are unsafe, the boat captain will cancel the trip. You will have the choice to reschedule your trip or receive a refund.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

Please bring your ticket(s) to speed the sign-in process, but your ID will suffice if you forget.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Please let us know if someone else will use your ticket. We will be happy to see them!
