Grand Rapids Downtown Alliance and Square Peg Events team up to
present culinary walking tours of downtown Grand Rapids
International Wine Tour kicks off pilot series on Tuesday, June 26 - tickets on sale now
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Grand Rapids Downtown Alliance and Square Peg Events, LLC, present
The International Wine Tour at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June, 26 ― the first in a new series of downtown walking tours featuring food-and-beverage sampling, culture and fun.
These tours will have a little bit of grit, a little bit of sass, and a whole lot of value," said Cynthia Hagedorn, owner and creative director of Square Peg Events.
"This is not a pub crawl. There's an educational component for intellectual, fun people who like to go out and learn something while enjoying a nice glass of wine and interesting food pairings. We're gearing all of these tours to encompass a variety of different kinds of food and beverages, and an array of retail and restaurant experiences."
The International Wine Tour will feature wine tastings paired with small-bite food samplings and
immerse participants in various international offerings in downtown
Grand Rapids in a entertaining and informational tour conducted by the Square Peg Events team.
"With the first tour, you will have the chance to feel like you're going on a tour of the world by trying wines of different countries,"
said Sharon Evoy, executive director of the Grand Rapids Downtown Alliance. "One of the true assets of downtown Grand Rapids is our wide variety of locally owned restaurants with high-quality food and great, creative chefs. Visitors can explore new places and try new things in a fun group setting."
Hosting venues for the tour include Old World Olive Press, Tre Cugini, San Chez Tapas Bistro and Bar Divani, with wine and food pairings ranging from Italian and Spanish classics to Michigan wines and old-world oils and vinegars.
"We're really looking forward to being a part of this tour," said Cindy Schneider, general manager at San Chez.
"Walking the city is a lot of fun, and it's great to have a community of downtown venues doing this together. The city is expanding.
There are so many more people walking around the downtown now.
Shasta Fase, co-owner or Old World Olive Press, agreed that the time is ripe for walking tours of downtown Grand Rapids.
"The downtown market has really evolved over the last couple of years, and what's going on down here now is really exciting," Fase said.
"What we've seen is Grand Rapids evolving into more of a foodie community. People are becoming more aware of what we have here ― all the different shops and restaurants downtown. It'll be nice for people to be able to catch a tour like this. There are tours like this in Detroit that have been around for a while, so I think they'll do really well here. It's about time for us!"
Completing the slate of four pilot tours are the Boys and Beer Tour including Cigars 101 on Tuesday, July 10, Chicks and Chocolate on
Tuesday, July 24, and The Artful Appetizer on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
We're starting with these four pilot tours between now and ArtPrize, then planning three more after ArtPrize, and,
if these are as well received in Grand Rapids as they have been in Holland, we'll continue into 2013," Hagedorn said.
Boys and Beer is just for the guys. It's a tour of tasting and learning. Our hosting locations will serve a flight of regional beers," she said.
"For Chicks and Chocolate, we'll circle downtown finding treasures of food, fashion, fun, martinis and delightful chocolates.
The Artful Appetizer will feature masterpiece appetizers ― each paired with the perfect beverage ― with each chef sharing the creative process behind each creation."
Future tours planned include Beer for Boys and Babes (and one ugly broad) on Oct. 23, The Tequila Trot and Whiskey Want on Nov. 13,
The Progressive Dinner Tour on Dec. 4, The W(h)ine Not Tour in Jan. 2013, The Cocktail Cruise featuring a celebrity bartender, Women and Whiskey and The Martini March.
