Torque: Performance and Exhibition Preview Tour
Fri, March 31, 2017, 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM BST
Join the artist collective Torque (Nathan Jones and Sam Skinner) for a performance followed by a special preview tour of their upcoming exhibition ‘Re-Learning to Read’ at Grundy Art Gallery (1 April – 13 May 2017).
The exhibition explores how new technologies change the way we read today and includes work from Erica Scourti, Anna Barham and Nicholas Malave. Using interactive installation, talks, films and workshops, Torque asks if we all need to relearn to read in an era of social media, emojis and speed reading apps. It includes a new reading machine (developed with artist Tom Schofield), combining scanners, screens and sculpture for a radically new human-computer reading experience. This machine scans books that people bring from home or the adjoining library, turning them into an array of text animation and other live media.
Visitors will be invited to experiment and play with the reading machine in the foyer of the Grundy during the duration of the exhibition and the accompanying group show in the Rotunda will include hand-made flip books, VR-headset poems, and digital art, asking: what new forms can reading take? You can also join us for the main Saturday preview of our new exhibitions on 1 April – Torque: Re-learning to Read and Rob Crosse: Prime Time (2.30 – 5pm)
