Description

Torch Fired Enamels: Hearts

According to historians, Valentine’s Day is a successor of the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia dating back to 300BC. Every year between February 13 and February 15, the Romans engaged in celebrations and rituals to honor the coming of spring. One of these rituals involved sacrificing a dog or a goat and using its skin to whip women, an act that was believed to increase their fertility. Yikes! No animals will be harmed and no fertility encouraged in this modern day Valentines Day workshop. Instead we will be making edgy heart shaped earrings and pendants using the ancient technique of fusing glass to metal known today as torch fired enamels.

Enameling is the colorful result of fusing powdered glasses to metal, using high heat to form a durable vitreous coating. The art of enameling is laborious and purchasing a kiln is expensive. Torch-fired enamels is a great way to add color to your metal projects without the expense. We will make a variety of findings and objects that you can use in your other jewelry projects as well as a ring, bracelet or pair of earrings.

Students may also use this as an open studio for those who have taken a previous Torch Fired Enamel Class with instructor and are ready to practice and develop their art independently. If needed, individual advice and guidance will be available. All equipment will be provided but feel free to bring your own tools as well. If you have any questions email Charles at spacewolf1@aol.com.

January 20th Sat. 11:00-4:00 $80.00

Charles Agel, instructor/* $35 supply fee, payable to instructor on day of class.
