Event description

Description

It gives us great pleasure to announce our first benefit dinner in New York City, which will be held on Friday, March 9, 2018 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in celebration of the bicentennial of Cole’s arrival in America from England in 1818.

The Honorary Co-Chairs are the artist Stephen Hannock and the musician Sting. The Honorees are Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser, the Alice Pratt Brown Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Tim Barringer, the Paul Mellon Professor in the History of Art at Yale University, in recognition of their outstanding achievement as co-curators of Thomas Cole’s Journey: Atlantic Crossings, a major exhibition opening at the Met in January 2018 and traveling to the National Gallery, London.

2018 will be a banner year for American art. In the landmark exhibition at the Met, Thomas Cole’s most iconic works, including The Oxbow (1836) and his five-part series The Course of Empire (1834–36) will be presented for the first time as a direct outcome of his transatlantic career. Dr. Barringer will also be co-curating a companion exhibition at the Thomas Cole site entitled, Picturesque and Sublime: Thomas Cole’s Trans-Atlantic Inheritance, opening May 1, 2018 in Thomas Cole’s New Studio.

Cocktails on March 9th will begin at the Metropolitan Museum of Art at 6:45 pm, followed by a seated dinner at 7:30 pm in a private room at the top of the Met overlooking Central Park. Seating at this intimate black tie event will be limited to 90 guests. Preceding the event, an exclusive tour of the exhibition Thomas Cole’s Journey with Elizabeth Mankin Kornhauser and Tim Barringer will be offered to guests at the “Course of Empire” level and above. We look forward to toasting our outstanding colleagues at the Met and at Yale on this unforgettable evening with you.
