In August 2017, Historic Hawai‘i Foundation will continue its popular statewide educational seminars to provide training on the tools and techniques available for community members to save historic places.

The full day seminars will help the public identify opportunities and rights to participate in historic preservation regulatory processes as well as share other means and tools for effective advocacy to save and preserve historic properties and cultural sites.

Who should attend? Community members and professionals who care about preserving the built and cultural sites that tell the stories of Hawai‘i’s history and wish to advocate on their behalf.

The seminars are provided in cooperation with the National Park Service.

  • Definitions and the purpose of historic preservation;
  • Definitions and criteria used to identify historic properties;
  • Which major Federal, State and Local laws and ordinances address historic preservation;
  • Opportunities, rights and responsibilities for public participation in the preservation processes; and
  • Additional methods, activities and practices to achieve preservation outcomes

The classes are free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required.


Lunch boxes may be purchased for Hilo & Kona (see ticket options). For all other seminars, a lunch break will be incorporated into the schedule and lunch may be purchased offsite.

Who should attend this seminar?

Members of the community interested in or responsible for preserving Hawaii’s historic and cultural places, including members of the general public and preservation professionals: historic preservation review commissioners; cultural resource commissioners; planning commissioners; planning department staff; elected officials; local preservation organizations; planners, architects, land owners and contractors who help preserve historic places.

May I attend any of the seminars?

Yes, you may choose to attend the seminars on the date and island of your choice as long as space is available.

Will lunch be provided?

A box lunch may be purchased in advance for the Kona and Hilo seminars (see ticket options). Lunch will be on your own for other locations with a lunch break built into the schedule. We must meet the minimum order requirements for the box lunches to make them available. A refund will be issued to you via Eventbrite should you purchase one and we do not meet the minimum.

What should I bring to the seminar?

Please bring a water bottle or container, pen and paper for notes and a sweater or jacket as the rooms are air-conditioned.
