This class is designed to introduce students to the Orion pulse arc welder with an overview of its capabilities, basic use and safety guidelines, and practice/Q&A to help students with their particular projects or interests.
The pulse-arc welder is a remarkable desktop machine for precision metal fabrication. In essence it is a scaled-down TIG welder with a computer interface and microscope – which makes it a unique, high-end tool for joining, tacking, and repair of small items in any metal that can be welded, from steel and stainless steel to titanium, gold, copper and more. A plasma arc is carried in controlled pulses by a tungsten electrode to melt metal together and add extra filler metal as needed. They're used in manufacturing, jewelry repair, electronics, and other industries to create secure joints without excessive heat or clean-up, and offer countless possibilities for making small parts and fine sculpture.
The goal of this class will be to train a student to the point where they can use the Orion pulse arc welder independently.
Students must be at least 18 years of age. No prior experience is required, though any familiarity with TIG welding helps shorten the learning curve.
Practice materials in a variety of metals are provided. Students are invited to bring items for repair or materials they'd like to work with to get advice.
Students are invited to bring items for repair or materials they would like to work with to get specific project advice.
