Event Times:

There will be 2 consecutive, 3 hour long sessions of this class on Sundays from 11am-2pm.

Session 1: Sunday, 6/18/17, 11am - 2pm.

Session 2: Sunday, 6/25/17, 11am - 2pm.

Course Description:

If you already have an idea of what you want to build, and you just want to learn how to safely use the basic tools you need (or just need a refresher), this Tool Training session is for you! This class teaches correct use of: the handheld power drill, impact driver, standing drill press, panel saw, circular saw, jig saw, scroll saw, spindle sander, belt sander and disc sander.

During the two class periods, students will learn and then have the opportunity to demonstrate their competency and get signed off on the tools. Students will be authorized to use the tools independently as members at Artisan's Asylum after successful completion of the testing portion for each tool.

Please note that this Tool Training does not provide significant practice with each tool, nor discuss any intermediate or advanced techniques. To learn how to use woodshop tools at a more advanced level, please take a look at the longer-form classes available on our Current Class Offerings page.

Class Goals:

By the end of the tool training session, students will be comfortable with the operation of the handheld power drill, impact driver, standing drill press, panel saw, circular saw, jig saw, scroll saw, spindle sander, belt sander and disc sander. Student will also be able to demonstrate knowledge of tool troubleshooting, shop organization and shop maintenance.

After passing the proficiency test, they will be able to use all of the tools in this group as a member in our workspace.

Prerequisites:

Students must be at least 18 years of age.

Materials Provided:

All practice materials will be provided by Artisan's Asylum.

What to Bring/Wear:

Students must wear shop appropriate clothes (no loose/billowy clothing or dangling jewelry/straps/scarves) closed-toe shoes or work boots, long hair secured. Safety glasses required, some may be available on site.

Instructor Biography:

Drew Hatzung has been woodworking since childhood. From building a working model of an escalator in the third grade for "word-of-the-day", to carpentry, cabinetry, furniture building, and more recently the full customization of a vintage Airstream travel trailer. Drew was the first maker chosen to represent the Artisan's Asylum in the Maker Exchange Cultural Residency Program, as a teacher, student, and collaborating artist in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
