The story is set on Christmas Eve: young Maria plays with her imaginary friends as her mother tends to last-minute dinner preparations. As Maria helps her mother make tamales, she discovers she has misplaced her mother's engagement ring. Believing the ring got into the masa, she convinces her cousins to eat the whole batch of tamales in an effort to find the ring. After consuming all of the family's Christmas Eve dinner, Maria learns a valuable lesson, and witnesses a Christmas miracle of love that reunites her family and brings to life her imaginary friends.
