Description

The Police are the public and the public are the police - repairing the breach. Presented by The Rev. Gayle Fisher-Stewart, Ph.D.

For decades, there has been a major disconnect between the police and the communities they serve, in particular, communities of color. Perhaps it is time to abolish the police as we have come to know it.

The Rev. Gayle Fisher-Stewart spent 20 years working as a police officer for the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department, retiring with the rank of captain. She joined the department in 1972, four years after riots destroyed parts of the city following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. At the time African-Americans made of 70 percent of the people living in the nation’s capital; at the same time, the police department was overwhelmingly white. Fisher-Stewart’s decision to join the police force baffled friends and family. The department had a bad reputation, she said, and “my friends weren’t happy because some of them had had negative interactions with police here in D.C.”

She currently serves as the associate pastor at Calvary Episcopal Church in Washington, DC, and is the founder of the Center for the Study of Faith in Justice at Calvary. The Center provides safe space for the discussion of issues that center on the intersection of faith and justice. Committed to God's justice for and in the world, she is the recipient of the 2016 Episcopal Evangelism Society Director’s Award and in 2017 received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Colgate University. She is also an author and her latest article, "To Serve and Protect: The Police, Race, and the Episcopal Church in the Black Lives Matter Era," can be found in the Anglican Theological Review (Summer 2017).

Doors open at 2:45pm. This event is NOT sponsored by the Arlington County Library.

After this presentation, we will adjourn to a local restaurant to continue the discussion. Please let us know if you would like to be included in the reservation. We would also appreciate recommendations on a restaurant within walking distance of the library. You may also inform us of any dietary restrictions.
