TOEFL Background

In order to attend a college or university in an English speaking country, a non-native English speaker must take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System) to be admitted to that college or university. These tests measure the student's ability to communicate and function adequately in English at the university level. The TOEFL and IELTS testreading, writing, listenting, and speaking skills.

There are many resources for advancing students' skills to accomplish the desired socres needed for each educational establishment; however, having a tutor has proven to be the best resource. Tutors can assess the needs of the student and design an individualized curriculum to enhance the competency of the student and to help them obtain the scores required for their selected college or university. Because the speaking and writing tasks require so much coaching, the face to face aspect of tutoring helps to improve those scores and the feedback given by the tutor is invaluable for the student.

Instructor Background

Jillian has taught the TOEFL for several years, recently returning from Chile where she taught students at Frederico Santa Maria Universidad and Pontifical Catholic Universidad de Valparaiso. She is currently employed at UC Davis teaching TOEFL skills. She has added the IELTS to her repertoire last year to assist those students who require that specific test over the TOEFL.

She is a former exchange student, expat, and host parent of over 40 foreign students. She understands the complexities of learning a foreign language and living in a foreign country. With her certificates in TOEFL and IELTS and life experiences she can offer perspectives other tutors cannot.
