Careers in the Life Sciences Industry Toby Freedman, Ph.D. Author, Career Opportunities in Biotechnology and Drug Development

This program is targeted for postdoctoral fellows who are considering a career in industry (biotechnology, pharma, medical devices, biofuels, food tech, government, research institutes and non profit organizations).

Toby Freedman will provide a high level overview of the many careers in the life sciences. She will describe a wide range of careers for postdocs in the biomedical sciences, including careers in venture capital, business development, marketing, discovery research and more. Toby will discuss things that you can do while in academia, that will help you when you are ready to find employment. She will discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of working in industry so that you can identify and embark on a fulfilling and meaningful career.

Topics for September 30 Class: The Many Careers in the Life Sciences

• The many careers in industry, academia, government, research institutes and non-profits will be considered–there are over 100 careers to consider

• Is industry for you? What to expect in industry, how it is different from academia, what the corporate culture is like, and some of the common challenges academics face when making the transition to industry

• Things that you can do now to prepare you for making the transition

Biography

Toby Freedman is a biotechnology recruiter and career development expert. She is president of Synapsis Search, which is focused on R&D and business recruiting for small and emerging life science companies.

Toby is the author of Career Opportunities in Biotechnology and Drug Development (www.careersbiotech.com), published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press. Her book provides an in-depth and comprehensive overview of the many careers in the life sciences industry and covers over 100 different careers, ranging from venture capital to marketing and discovery research.

Toby previously worked as a recruiter at BioQuest, an executive retained search firm, and before that as Director of Business Development at SLIL Biomedical, a startup drug discovery company. She earned a Ph.D. in biology/molecular biology from UNC Chapel Hill and as an NIH Fellow, conducted postdoctoral research at Harvard University and at the University of Texas-Austin. Toby is the Program Chair at the BioScience Forum, a non-profit educational forum serving the San Francisco biotechnology community.
