Description

THIS EVENT WILL BE RESCHEDULED TO A FUTURE DATE:

SUPERINTENDENTS/COLLEGE PRESIDENTS PARTNERSHIP ANNUAL FORUM

Building the Educational Future for Long Island Student Success

Keynote Address: New York State Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa

Special Guest: New York State Regent Roger B. Tilles

EVENT DETAILS

Join higher education and K-12 partners for a regional core-alignment conversation to frame the work ahead.

In addition, the SCPP is proud to recognize the teams of volunteers that participated in a more than six-year regional college readiness initiative to develop a “real-world” definition of college readiness. The first-in-the-nation comprehensive description of college readiness addresses not only test scores, but also academic skills, habits of mind, and affective attributes that promote college success.

Developing a shared understanding serves to inform the profession, make a contribution to the larger conversation about secondary/post-secondary alignment, promote equity across the region, and improve student attainment rates.

Workgroups to be recognized include:

College Readiness: Counselor/Advisor Workgroup
Representatives from a 40-member high school-college core team identified key understandings, skills, and dispositions that best support students for the social and emotional challenges of the transition to college. Co-chairs will highlight a college readiness pilot program designed to help families and their students build foundational practices for future success and share next steps to bring this project to scale across Long Island.

College Readiness: Mathematics Workgroup
SCPP Mathematics Chair Dr. Timothy Eagen and partners representing a 16-member core team will outline the proposed 12th grade mathematics course designed to best align with non-STEM college freshmen expectations.

College Readiness: Writing Skills Workgroup
Co-chairs will share strategies for a collaborative, regional approach to eliminate instructional gaps.

SCPP Mission Statement

The Superintendents-College Presidents Partnership is a unique and ongoing forum that addresses matters affecting teaching and learning on Long Island. Recognizing that K through 12 and postsecondary institutions are systemically interdependent, the Partnership identifies shared solutions across academic levels. The Partnership engages other sectors (e.g., business, government) in collaborations to improve the quality of life, work, and learning in our region. Our Mission:

  1. To support the continuous improvement of teacher education programs;
  2. To attract more high school graduates to Long Island colleges; thereby increasing the likelihood that they will choose to live and work locally;
  3. To encourage students to pursue teaching careers in subject areas that have shortages: science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); and
  4. To address issues of transition for all students.

Organizer LIRACHE

Organizer of TO BE RESCHEDULED: Superintendents/College Presidents Partnership Annual Forum

The Long Island Regional Advisory Council on Higher Education (LIRACHE) is a consortium of 15 colleges and universities. Collectively, it represents nearly 34,000 employees, and more than 163,000 students, and $5 billion in annual operating budgets.

The president or CEO of each institution is a member of the LIRACHE Board of Trustees, allowing each college or university to speak with one voice, to serve the Long Island community, and to make intercollegiate connections that are so important to our region’s future.

The Superintendents/College Presidents Partnership (S/CPP)--a LIRACHE work group--brings higher education and PreK-12 leadership together. The S/CPP works to address regional concerns and foster a seamless transition from primary and secondary education to college, focusing on skill sets for math, science, writing and comprehension, academic integrity, and access for students with disabilities.

In addition to regional intiatives, LIRACHE publishes two annual resource guides: the Annual Expenditures Report and the College Inform.  The College Inform, a booklet for guidance counselors, college-bound students and parents, includes admissions data and contact information for admissions, athletics, disability services, career services, and financial aid. For more information, visit www.lirache.org.
