This is the second TLC core course. Please note that Children of Trauma is a prerequisite to this training. Experience the evidence based, structured sensory interventions that are presented in Children of Trauma. Hands on activities will provide participants with practice using TLC Structured Sensory Interventions for Traumatized Children, Adolescents and Parents (SITCAP). Case studies will be shared to teach you how to apply mind body skills while focusing on the primary themes of trauma including safety, worry, hurt, fear, anger, revenge and moving from victim to survivor thinking.
Those attending this course as a part of the Certification program will receive a Tools to Help the Helper DVD. This course is a requirement for Level-1 Certification and a pre-requisite for Level-2 and Level-3 Certification. You do not need to be enrolled in the Certification Program to attend this course.
Brief Description of Instructional Format
This is a day of practicing and experiencing the evidence based structured sensory interventions presented in the Children of Trauma course. These interventions include NITLC’s school-based programs as well as agency recommended strategies.
To demonstrate and then allow participants the opportunity to experience and practice structured trauma interventions designed to help them help ameliorate survivor reactions, posttraumatic stress and grief reactions in children/adolescents exposed to violent or non-violent yet trauma inducing incidents.
Review and practice interventions to ameliorate survivor reactions, post-traumatic stress and grief reactions in children following violent and non-violent traumatic losses.
- Discuss the importance of becoming a witness as a way to help trauma victims heal.
- Demonstrate how to provide trauma specific structured sensory interventions with children/adolescents traumatized by violent or non-violent, yet traumatic incidents.
- Discuss issues related to initiating and providing structured sensory intervention into individual/group sessions with traumatized children.
Trainer: Derek Allen
Derek Allen, MA, is the Director of the Starr Global Learning Network and also serves as Senior Circle of Courage Trainer/Consultant, Senior Glasswing Trainer/Consultant, and as an Assistant Trainer for TLC.
In these capacities Derek trains professionals throughout North America in use of the Circle of Courage model, leads adults through complex discussions related to diversity and racial healing, and provides practical, evidence-based training in trauma-informed care. He also provides “thought-leadership” to the Starr Commonwealth organization in the areas of strength-based approaches in education and treatment and building resilience in children and families.
Derek is currently pursuing a doctoral degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
