TKO Trail Workshop Series - Tread School (101 Weekend)

Trailkeepers of Oregon (TKO) is pleased to offer this special event, nestled along the Salmon River within the Zigzag District of the Mt. Hood National Forest. We've got the fun training all figured out, plus food/refreshments and a beautiful place to stay - grab a bunk, pitch your tent, or rent a room for the weekend and get ready to build some trails.

TKO, partner, and agency instructors will deliver a comprehensive trails training, setting a foundation of trail design and maintenance skills. Experts and novices alike can build relationships with current and future trail stewards who are all seeking to hone their undertanding of how trails work through hands-on experiences. This weekend training is equivalent to Pacific Crest Trail Association's Trails 100-102 curriculum concepts on:

  • The importance of safety while performing trail stewardship
  • An introduction to understanding hillside hydrology and how trails work
  • Using your “Trail Eyes” to accurately survey a trail corridor for logs, brushing, and tread needs.
  • Safe use of loppers and hand saws for effective lopping and sawing skills to protect trees and maximize efficiency
  • How to identify cupped tread and restore it to appropriate outslope by removing slough and berm
  • How to identify and clean drain dips and water bars effectively

Trails enthusiasts of all types and professionals are invited to attend, especially those with an interest in maintaining trails in the Mt. Hood National Forest and surrounding areas. Hosted by Trailkeepers of Oregon and the Oregon Trails Coalition with support from the National Forest Foundation.

However, we are happy to provide scholarships for anyone for whom cost is a barrier.

Basecamp is located in the Welches/ Zigzag area of Mt. Hood National Forest, and work/learning sites are on nearby trails. Further information about locations, accommodations, what to bring, etc will be sent to registrants.
