Workshop: Solar and Off-Grid applications
For most tiny home owners, going off grid is the ultimate goal. If going off grid is your goal, you’ll need a number of systems to make your goal a reality. These include electrical generation, freshwater storage and filtration, grey and black water disposal and alternative heating and cooling.
In this workshop finally, we’ll explore the pros, cons and design considerations of all these systems, and the most efficient ways to incorporate them into your tiny house. We will look at examples of passive solar features such as insulation, thermal mass, day-lighting, overhangs, and venting. We will discuss components such as solar water heaters, Low-e coatings, and intentional shading. We’ll also discuss photovoltaic power, initial costs, maintenance, return on investment, types of panels that are best for your application, and different charge controllers, batteries and inverters.
By the end of this technical workshop, you’ll know whether plugged in or unplugged is right for you, and how to design, install and maintain a basic off grid system that fits your needs.
