This continuation of our natural perfumery series will explore the use of concentrated or "folded" tinctures in perfumery. If you enjoy making medicinal tinctures, consider that many of your chosen medicines may also function as beautiful perfume bases. Jessica will share her collection of aromatic tinctures of flowers, roots, resins, spices, and many other botanicals and offer advice on extraction guidelines and practices. A light, herbacious floral perfume will be composed from the showcased ingredients as the medicinal and aromatic properties of the tinctures are discussed. The Herb Shoppe carries many aromatics which you can easily extract on your own, making this the perfect setting for this class. Each student will go home with a vial of the cologne we craft.
MORE ABOUT WEDNESDAY NIGHT PERFUME SALONS WITH JESSICA RING
Join distiller, perfumer, and aromatic alchemist Jessica Ring as she fuses the art forms of medicinal aromatherapy with botanical perfumery. Collectively we will be creating perfumes, aromatherapy blends, massage oils, incenses, and many other medicines that teach us about the nature of aromatic plants. Not just their medicinal nature, but the character of the spirit of the plant. The way a fragrance expands and contracts, the way it moves through the room, the depth and intensity it displays, and the effect it has on the senses are all aspects of perfumery that we will look at with curiosity as we ask questions about how to best pair fragrances to achieve contrast, harmony, focus, and longevity. When we seek to understand the mystery of that which is invisible, intangible, and rooted in the ancestral, we often find ourselves leaning away from the cognitive and into the deeper animalic instincts. We will delve into old stories and emotional mysteries and allow fragrance concepts to evolve alongside our understanding of the plants the essences speak for. Our objective is to learn to listen to fragrance, to really hear it before we attempt to shape it. Some classes in this series will be entirely sensory based. Some nights I may not even speak but will simply compose and share the scent as it evolves, or silently create a custom perfume for a student as an example of the wordless nature of fragrance and emotion. Other nights we will blend potions in lab glass and wear goggles and discuss viscosity and volatility and the best way to distill for perfume. We will celebrate fire, and bind opposing aromatics. Some evening we will pair deserts with perfume, other nights we will sip tea and spring water laced with aromatic hydrosols. Surprise guest speakers will be coming to share their perfumery wisdom. On dark nights, filled with storms we will crush resins and make incense to call ourselves back from dark places. We will dream up, and then bring to life, perfumes of the desert, perfumes of the forest, perfumes of the craggled coastlines, and then we will wear them in our hair, on our collars, smudged onto our notes, and soaking our shoe laces.
If you wish to join this experimental series of perfume salons please come at any time! These classes will build in momentum, but can be taken individually or in series. For both beginners and experienced aromatic artists alike, these classes are meant to be a healing experience for the senses. Cost is sliding scale, 25$ per 2 hour class. Students will go home with a free sample of our blended creation each night.
