Event description

Description

Do you have some opinions about human rights? Not really sure what they are? Want to learn more and contribute to a new national research project? Then please join us at this event organised by the Helena Kennedy Centre for International Justice (Sheffield Hallam) and Sheffield Futures as part of the ESRC’s Festival of Social Sciences.

Many of us care about creating a “better” society - maybe one where marginalised communities are protected, where there's equality of opportunity. Some believe human rights and the Human Rights Act 1998 are powerful tools to achieve these goals. Yet there's also a view that human rights laws mainly protect the rights of 'them' (foreigners/prisoners/terrorists) whilst denying the rights of 'us' (the 'good guys'). Human rights are also regarded as elitist and not relevant to most people's lives.

This event will provide an opportunity to explore these ideas. It'll mark the starting point of a new research project documenting British people's attitudes towards human rights. If you attend you'll play a crucial role in shaping tihe research project, identifying the types of questions that should be asked and the best ways to encourage members of the public to contribute.

This is a critical time to be researching what people think about human rights - and gathering views in as balanced and non-partisan a way as possible. The future of human rights in the UK is up in the air. The Conservative Party has vowed to scrap the Human Rights Act and replace it with a British Bill of Rights. Brexit will have an impact on the nature and protection of certain rights. It’s essential for people to be informed of these developments and have an opportunity to voice their opinion.

Key questions covered will include:

- what kinds of rights do we want protected?

- how should we protect those rights?

- is the language of “rights” helpful?

This will be a collaborative, inclusive event. We'd love to hear your views! We’d also love you to tweet your ideas #scraphumanrights
