INSTRUCTOR: Chris Foraker

Timber framing is a timeless tradition among the owners and builders. In this class you will learn the craft of joining large timbers without the use of metal hardware. Students will learn not only the craft of cutting timber frame joinery, but also the important details necessary to properly layout joinery using both edge and center rule. During this week students will also learn how to cut, peel and prepare round poles for construction as well as the techniques used to layout, scribe, and notch round poles for use in the home.

A light local, organic, gluten- and dairy-free lunch with refreshments will be provided.

ABOUT CHRIS: Chris comes from a family of teachers, bricklayers and biologists. In 2004 he graduated from Montana State University with honors achieving a B.S. in Ecology and Evolution. During this time he began his studies of woodcraft, round-pole joinery, small dwellings, and urban ecology. Chris first came to Aprovecho in 2005 and has served the organization in the sustainable forestry and building departments. In addition to his administrative tasks, he coordinates the Natural Building Programs at Aprovecho, specifically the Natural Building Practicum and the Sustainable Shelter Workshop Series, as well as the Appropriate Technology program.

REGISTRATION

Please register to reserve your space. You will receive an email confirmation within 2-3 business days. Our refund policy is 14 days in advance for a full refund. After that it is a partial refund up to 3 days before the class or workshop begins.

ROOM AND BOARD

Non-local students who are traveling to attend our workshops have the option to stay on campus on a first-come, first-served basis. If staying on campus, a bed in a double dormitory room is $20 per night. There may be other options available. Please contact us for details. Students are asked to bring their own food and will have acces to a full kitchen.

Refreshments and a light gluten-free, organic, vegetarian lunch will be offered for each day of the workshop for all students.

ABOUT OUR WORKSHOPS

Apart from our internationally-recognized summer residential programs in Permaculture and Sustainable Shelter, Aprovecho also hosts guest instructors during the winter months to teach workshops aligned with our mission and vision. The road to new skills is long and requires patience and hard work. We aim to give people, from beginners to advanced practitioners, the expert knowledge and guided practice they need to develop or advance skills. We offer the best well-known and emerging instructors in the Pacifc Northwest community.
